Verstappen ‘ready to race’ as father Jos suggests he makes rivals ‘nervous’

Max Verstappen is ready and raring to go with the 2020 Formula 1 season, as the sport eyes a double-header in Austria in July.

The Dutchman headed into this year eager to finally challenge Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes for the championship, filled with the confidence that Red Bull and Honda can put together a competitive package.

Of course, all of that expectation has had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus, and the Dutchman is getting increasingly restless to get back on track.

“Normally I love being at home, so it isn’t too bad. however, I do love to race; it’s the thing I love most,” he told ServusTV.

“I enjoy racing on the limit so the only thing I can do at home is race on the sim, but hopefully, we can start soon in the real world.”

On the prospect of a double-header at Spielberg, where he memorably won last year, Verstappen was unsurprisingly very much in favour.

“I would love to have two races at the Red Bull Ring,” he said. “I love driving there and we had some good results in the last two years.

“Usually we are quicker in the second half of the season so hopefully we can make that leap at the start. The car felt good in winter testing in Barcelona.

“We’ll see how it goes once we’re back in the car, hopefully in Austria.

“Whatever the situation, I am fit and ready to race!”

Meanwhile, Max’s father Jos Verstappen has been talking up the intimidation factor his son has over his rivals due to his aggressive approach.

“People often forget that Max regularly had to take more risks because he was in a slower car than, for example, Hamilton,” the former F1 driver told De Telegraaf.

“Max always drives on the edge. People want to see that too, and Vettel and Hamilton get a bit nervous when he drives behind them, nice, isn’t it?”
