Vettel remains ‘a great leader’ at Ferrari – Binotto

Sebastian Vettel remains a “great leader” at Ferrari as speculation over his future continues.

While the four-time world champion is out of contract at the end of this year, it has become increasingly likely in recent weeks that Vettel will be staying on for 2021 and beyond.

Of course, his performances in the first half of this season could change that, but a key factor in the German’s favour is what he brings to the Scuderia.

“I think he came with a lot of experience being world champion,” team boss Mattia Binotto stated last week in Barcelona.

“I think he is a great leader for the team. He is great with the engineers, with the team and with his teammate as well which is important as he is always trying to push us to our best.

“He is always doing the same as well and taking the steps to get himself forward and demanding what he needs from the team, which is a matter of the entire team making themselves better which is important.”

Sitting next to his boss at that moment, Vettel joked in response: “I think I can be annoying as well, so there is a fine line between demanding and annoying.”

Another reason why the 32-year-old remains crucial to Ferrari is his experience alongside Charles Leclerc, who is still clearly developing in terms of his ability to lead a team.

Of course, his speed has often a match for Vettel and the Monegasque says he’d be more than happy to see their partnership continue.

“I feel very good with Seb,” he said. “I believe that we have found the right balance in our relationship. After that, it’s up to me to be a driver.

“These are decisions that belong to Ferrari and I will respect them but I would add that, at my age, I can still learn a lot from different teammates.”
