Sebastian Vettel has criticised the decision to only resurface part of the starting grid at the Sochi Autodrom ahead of the Russian Grand Prix.
Several key parts of the circuit have seen new tarmac laid including the high-speed Turn 8 but only the first two-and-a-half starting positions have been repaved, potentially giving the Mercedes an advantage off the line.
“I don’t know, I thought P3 is also just in range. If not that’s not good,” said the Ferrari driver. “The resurfacing should be a bit higher.
“I think it’s wrong to resurface just a bit, whether that’s positions 1-2-3, or 4-5-6, 8-9-10, it doesn’t matter.
“If you resurface something on the grid you should resurface everything. But it is what it is.”

Polesitter Valtteri Bottas also admitted it could be a benefit for him especially on the clean side of the grid although that is not guaranteed.
“I think it’s a little bit unknown to say exactly how much there is going to be a grip difference if there is going to be,” he said.
“Usually new tarmac tends to have a bit more grip – but also it depends on the type of tarmac.
“We’ve been only driving around that part of the track in non-grip-limited conditions, so flat-out. We’ll find out tomorrow how it’s going to affect.”
