Williams give Latifi Friday outings in Mexico, Austin & Brazil with an eye on 2020

Williams will put prospective 2020 driver Nicholas Latifi into the car for Friday morning practice at the upcoming three Grands Prix.

The Canadian has been the reserve driver at the Grove team all season and is expected to step up and replace Robert Kubica next season, thanks in part to the financial backing of his father.

Latifi though has shown solid potential finishing second to Nyck de Vries in this year’s Formula 2 championship and was even linked to a mid-season swap with Kubica earlier this year.

“I’m really excited to get back in the car in Mexico as it feels like a long time since my previous outing at Spa,” said the 24-year-old.

“I got the chance to drive in Mexico last year in FP1 [with Racing Point], so I am familiar with what to expect.

“It’s quite a unique track because of the elevation, so you have a lack of grip, which makes it challenging.

“As always, my goal remains the same for FP1, to have a clean session and help guide the team going into FP2.”

Latifi will be in Kubica’s car at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez before replacing George Russell in Austin and likely switching back to the Pole at Interlagos.
