Wolff: Claims of an argument with Hamilton in Australia ‘total nonsense’

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has rejected claims he and Lewis Hamilton had an argument over whether the Australian Grand Prix should go ahead.

The six-time world champion was particularly vocal about his unhappiness at the decision not to at least postpone the event in Melbourne last month, suggesting “cash is king”.

Wolff himself was happy to continue with the weekend however, and initially voted for it to proceed in the meeting on Thursday night, only to later change that vote after a phone call with Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius.

“Total nonsense!” he told the Osterreich newspaper of the Hamilton rift rumour.

“Lewis and I were in conversation every second in Australia. Also on that night in which the cancellation occurred.

“We also speak to each other every other day. Our relationship is closer than ever.”

Wolff also revealed that during this wait to start the season due to the coronavirus pandemic, informal talks were continuing over Hamilton’s new contract.

“We also talk about our future every day, but there is nothing dramatic about it,” he continued.

“Everything indicates that we will continue in a similar form to today.”
