Jonas Folger has been busy visiting specialists in the Munich area to diagnose the illness that sidelined him from the Japanese GP and subsequent races in Australia, Malaysia and this weekend’s finale in Valencia.

After returning from Japan, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider went for tests at the TU Munich, Department of Sports Medicine and in addition had further examinations with Dr. Hierl and Dr. Burghardt. A strain of Gilbert Syndrome was discovered, a common genetic disorder affecting 2%-5% of the population, where the liver is unable to process toxins effectively.

This has been an underlying condition that has plagued the German rookie for several years but had never been diagnosed properly. Prior to the Japanese GP it had escalated to a point where his entire body shut down, rendering him bedridden.

Folger is currently going through a complete detoxification and cleansing of the body to help flush his liver and disperse of all toxins and moving forward he will need to adapt to a special diet. In addition, since his crash in Aragon, the German’s throat was damaged which affected his voice badly.

He visited a specialist and they found a damaged nerve in the right vocal chords, but recovery can take 1-2 years to return to normal.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider has only one objective: to return to racing as soon as possible.

"It’s a huge relief that we now have a clear understanding of the situation and how to move forward." Commented Folger "The past 6 weeks have been very difficult for me, not knowing what’s happening or why my body shut down completely."

"I’ve been living with elements of this since 2011 but I’ve always been able to overcome it and we never really knew what it was. It’s unfortunate that it took such a serious episode to finally diagnose the situation but I’m just thankful we now have some answers."

"I miss my team and all my friends in the paddock. I’ve received a lot of support from everyone on social media, not just fans but my competitors also and this means a lot to me." He added

"I’d like to thank everyone at Monster Yamaha Tech3 and all my sponsors for their belief in me, and messages of support. I will be back and stronger than ever, fighting at the top of MotoGP."

Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo was closer than ever to the win last time out at a rain-soaked Sepang, crossing the line seven tenths behind winner and teammate Andrea Dovizioso.

It was another podium in red as the ‘Spartan’ settles in and adapts to a bike very different to that which he had ridden since 2008, and although he is not yet fighting for the title, his teammate is – something he says is a special opportunity.

“A world title for Ducati is something very special,” says the Majorcan, “And I want this to happen. Obviously, if I can, on my side. But if I can’t, it’s good that Dovi does it.”

And Lorenzo says that yes, rivalry in the box is always important – but that his focus is on the best for Ducati: “He is my teammate, he is the first one that you have to beat or you want to beat because he has the same bike as you, but also we are in a team. Okay, it’s an individual sport but finally you want the best for Ducati.”

“I think it was the right decision to make, even if the results at the moment are not the same,” explains the five-time World Champion.

“My mind-set was that I needed to enter this new challenge and take on this new challenge with a lot of patience and understanding that it was question of time, that it was a question of process, of changing a lot of things. And little by little I keep improving. And I think I’m still far from my limit.”

In terms of the limit, that is also a question of the bike – something Lorenzo says will adapt to him more in the future, too. “The bike also doesn’t change completely during the season. This also slowed down a little bit my performance. Because I still need to adapt to the bike more than the bike is adapting to my riding so this is not easy for me."

"But I think that maybe the engineers are working on giving me some solutions that really make my life easier next year.”

Leading almost fifty laps this year and taking a number of podiums, Lorenzo has been cutting the gap to the winner considerably of late – and says his belief in his ability and work ethic is unwavering.

“Even if now I’m not aspiring to fight for the World Championship for the moment, because I’m not competitive enough, I will always believe that I can win someday and I can get it,” affirms the ‘Spartan’

“I don’t know the future, nobody knows the future. The thing I know is that I will be working very hard, I will never give up in my will to win. And I will probably be much better than this year.”

But just before the future begins, the final race of 2017 remains – at Valencia, where Lorenzo first tested the ‘Desmosedici’. And where Lorenzo has taken the win, pole position and set a new lap record for the past two years.

Dani Pedrosa is scheduled to make his 277th GP start in Valencia, moving him into a clear fourth place above Alex Barros in the all-time Grand Prix starts list.

And it’s a good track for the Spaniard to do it, with Pedrosa the rider on the grid with most previous victories at Valencia – six.

“We head to Valencia in a positive mood, looking to try and finish the season with a good result,” says Pedrosa ahead of the event. “I always feel a good atmosphere there, and I get a lot of good energy from the fans!”

In addition, Pedrosa – the poleman in Malaysia last time out – says that they made a step forward during the weekend at Sepang, and it leaves him ready to try and take a second victory on home turf this season, having first been on the top step at Jerez.

“We made a step with our bike setup in Malaysia,” affirms the Spaniard, “and this gives us confidence for the weekend. Valencia is a track that I like a lot, I’ve been strong in the past and had good results so I hope that the bike works well there and we can do a good race.”

Good results indeed, with six wins across all classes and the ‘Baby Samurai’ gunning for a seventh – as teammate Marquez aims for the Championship.
