Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso ended Day 1 at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan as the fastest man on track, but the Italian was only 0.043 ahead of his nearest challenger – Championship leader Marc Marquez.

Marquez was fastest in the morning by some margin before ‘DesmoDovi’ hit back, and the reigning Champion ended his afternoon session prematurely with a crash at Turn 4 – rider ok.

Aleix Espargaro was top Independent Team rider on Day 1, and impressed in both sessions – second in FP1 and third in FP2 to go third overall.

He was just ahead of Ducati Team’s Jorge Lorenzo, who was fourth in both the morning and afternoon – despite an incident in which the Majorcan was collected up in a crash for Cal Crutchlow.

Johann Zarco was the top Yamaha on Day 1 and completed the top five, 0.073 seconds clear of fellow Indendenpent Team rider Danilo Petrucci  – who was another 0.073 ahead of compatriot Andrea Iannone.

Dani Pedrosa managed to find something in the afternoon session to move up to P8, having struggled in FP1 with the combination of wet weather and relatively low temperature.

He headed Crutchlow, with rookie Alex Rins completing the top ten as both Hamamatsu factory machines were amongst the potential Q2 graduates. Suzuki also had a new aero-fairing out on track.

Maverick Viñales as he moved down from FP1 to FP2, ending Friday in eleventh and just over  a tenth faster than his teammate Valentino Rossi.

0.018 seconds further back was one of the most impressive performances of the first day as Kohta Nozane – replacing Jonas Folger – took thirteenth, ahead of Scott Redding and Karel Abraham.

The weather sadly looks unlikely to change too much, but it remains to be seen how the skies look for FP3 as graduation to Q2 is decided, and then the grid for the race on Sunday.

Yamaha Tech 3's Jonas Folger will sit out the Japanese GP and return immediately to his native Germany for medical checks.

The Clinica Mobile medical staff examined Folger on Wednesday and recommended that he undertake further tests in Munich, with his participation in the next two rounds being doubtful.

The entire team have wished the German a swift and full recovery, with Yamaha test rider Kohta Nozane then called up to replace Folger.

Nozane, a Yamaha test rider and a member of the YART team in the Endurance World Championship, has ridden the track before in his testing duties for the Japanese factory - and says it's his favourite track. It will be his first time racing in the premier class.

"This is big surprise for me! I still can’t believe that I will ride at the Grand Prix of Japan." Commented Nozane

"Motegi is my favourite circuit, and I have ridden the YZR-M1 with Michelin tyres here before as a Yamaha test rider. It will be an honour to ride on home soil like a MotoGP rider."

"I would like to thank Yamaha and Monster Yamaha Tech3 for giving me this opportunity."

Aleix Espargaro was the man who got closest to the reigning Champion, with Scott Redding third.

The highest profile incident in the session saw Jorge Lorenzo sideswiped out of Turn 9 by a crash from Cal Crutchlow, but the five-time World Champion walked away and ended the session P4 – just ahead of teammate Andrea Dovizioso.

The entire team have wished the German a swift and full recovery.

"I came to Japan and was motivated for these three flyaway races, but I’ve been feeling really weak since the Misano and Aragon rounds." Said Folger

"On arrival here, I have been struggling with my energy levels, even leaving the hotel room was impossible for me, and unfortunately, I had to miss some Yamaha events, which I’m very sorry for."

"I met with Hervé on Wednesday night and we agreed to go for a check with the doctors this morning. I met with Dr Charte and the Clinica Mobile team and they have advised me to return to Germany right away for a series of blood tests." He added

"I’ve had Epstein Barr virus in the past and it’s a possibility that this has flared up again and resurfaced, but we can’t be sure until I’ve had these tests in Munich."

"I’m really sorry for my whole team and Yamaha at their home race and would like to thank them for all their support. Also sorry to my personal sponsors, I appreciate them all standing by me at this difficult time. Now we must remain positive and aim to come back stronger."
