Albon hopes to be ‘in the mix’ after claiming P5 in qualifying

Alex Albon is confident of a stronger race after being unhappy with P5 in Mexican Grand Prix qualifying.

The Red Bull driver finished six-tenths down on teammate Max Verstappen but that wasn’t a fair reflection of the gap between the pair for much of the weekend.

Reflecting on his lap, however, Albon admitted the lack of representative running heading into the session meant it wasn’t ideal.

“I think the car was a bit quicker than P5 today so I’m a bit disappointed,” he said afterwards.

“But after FP2, and with the rain as well in FP3, I kind of started from FP1 and if I had a bit more clean running I would have been able to improve a bit more.

“Nevertheless, we are in the mix for the race and we’ll see tomorrow.”

Like most, Albon’s final attempt was ultimately cut short by Valtteri Bottas’ crash at the final corner, but even before then few were making any improvements on their initial best time on their second run.

“I think that happens quite a lot, not just here but in general,” he suggested.

“You always know where you need to improve in the second run and then the tyres just get too hot. It’s just one of those things.”
