Fernando Alonso is in hospital after being struck by a car while cycling in Switzerland, Alpine has confirmed.
The two-time Formula 1 champion is set to return to the grid in 2021 following a two-year absence, but is now awaiting further medical evaluations on Friday morning on any possible injuries.
Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, who broke the news, claim Alonso was quickly rescued after being hit while training on the roads near the city of Lugano, and Alpine has stated the 39-year-old remains conscious.
But now Alpine and F1 will face an anxious wait to see if the Spaniard will be fit to participate in the pre-season tests and opening round of the 2021 F1 season next month in Bahrain.
Story will be updated.
