Sauber has announced that Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will depart from the team after the 2024 Formula 1 season. The decision comes as the team prepares for an upcoming transition with Audi’s entry in 2026.

Nico Hulkenberg has been confirmed for a 2025 seat with Sauber, while Formula 3 champion and Formula 2 leader Gabriel Bortoleto is expected to fill the remaining slot.

Reflecting on his departure, Bottas said, “A situation like this is never easy for anyone. After many discussions, we realized the conditions to grow together weren’t met”.

“These past years with Sauber have been an incredible journey full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. Though it’s time to move on, I’ll always carry a piece of this team with me.”

Sauber and Audi team principal Mattia Binotto expressed his appreciation for Bottas, stating, “Valtteri has been the embodiment of professionalism, using his experience to support the team’s growth. His dedication has been invaluable during a pivotal time in our history”.

“While we considered him a key candidate for the future, mutual discussions led us to conclude that the final conditions couldn’t be met, so we agreed it was time to part ways. Valtteri will always have an open door here in Hinwil.”

Zhou Guanyu, who debuted with Sauber in 2022, also commented on his departure, “I am fully committed to finishing the season strong”.

“I’m grateful to Sauber for giving me a chance in F1 and for helping me grow over these three years. I’m now focused on the next step in my career.”

As Sauber moves forward with new talent, Bottas and Zhou will look ahead to their future paths in F1.
