Practice 1 was suspended after four minutes due to camera issues at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The session began with early drama for Pierre Gasly, who ground to a halt approaching Turn 8 due to a clutch problem in his Alpine.
The subsequent red flag ran until the end of the session due to a technical issue with the CCTV system, which is required by Race Control for safety reasons.
12 drivers managed flying laps before the stoppage with Valtteri Bottas going fastest for Alfa Romeo.
Hometown favourite Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso sat second and third in their heavily upgraded Aston Martins.

Sergio Perez led teammate Max Verstappen as the two Red Bulls followed in fourth and fifth, ahead of Oscar Piastri in sixth.
The Haas pair of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg followed in seventh and eighth, with Zhou Guanyu complaining of major bottoming in ninth.
Carlos Sainz was 10th ahead of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc and Nyck De Vries was the last driver to set a lap time.
To compensate the teams and fans for the lost track time, Practice 2 will now be 90 minutes instead of 60 and begin half an hour earlier at 4:30 pm Montreal time.
