Former Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene has offered encouragement after a poor start to 2019.

The Italian left the Scuderia by mutual consent at the start of this year, following speculation of in-fighting between himself and his replacement Mattia Binotto.

But having overseen a strong improvement in results during his tenure, Ferrari has not been able to sustain it, with Mercedes claiming five 1-2s to begin this season.

Rather than perhaps have a sense at satisfaction at the struggles, however, Arrivabene insists he still only wants the team to succeed.

“I committed myself to the maximum I gave everything I could, and in difficult moments I had voluntary silences, which I still maintain today,” he told Sky Italia.

“If I talk it is only to invite everyone to support the team, all the guys, because I have always thought, even when I was working in Maranello, that it is easy to get on the wagon when the podiums arrive, but it is much less to support the team in difficult times.

“I want to say ‘Forza Ragazzi’, the heart and the mind are with you, and I hope that all the fans do the same thing. The championship is still long.”

Also still touting the potential of Ferrari to bounce back is Formula 1 motorsport director Ross Brawn.

“It’s becoming difficult to find adjectives to describe Mercedes’ first quarter of the season,” he commented after last weekend’s race in Spain.

“Five wins, five one-twos – pretty much perfect.

“So, is that it then, championship over but for a battle between the two team-mates at the Anglo-German team? I don’t think so as there are still a lot of races to come, but it’s true to say that Mercedes have laid down a strong early marker on both championships.”
