Honda is in talks to secure Naoki Yamamoto a role within Red Bull after his impressive performance during a practice outing in Japan.

The two-time Super Formula and 2018 Super GT champion finished just a tenth behind Daniil Kvyat albeit with the help of softer tyres in his first Formula 1 session at Suzuka.

And though at 31, the chances of a seat at the renamed AlphaTauri team were ruled out, Honda revealed a position perhaps as a reserve or development driver could be on the cards.

“We confirm that we are having conversations about him with Red Bull and Helmut Marko,” Honda’s F1 managing director Masashi Yamamoto told Autosport.

“We have quite a good offer but this is not only Honda’s decision or the team’s decision, we have to speak to Naoki himself as well of course.

“He’s participating in different series as well. It’s still ongoing.”

Honda has made their desire clear to have a Japanese driver as part of their partnership with Red Bull, however, Masashi Yamamoto noted nationality and indeed speed isn't the only factor to be considered.

“Of course, the driving skill or speed is needed, but it’s not only about that,” he explained.

“If you see Jenson Button, he’s quick, but also his personality, the way he reacts to fans and also the media as well, and also the team relationship, dealing with people.

“Those aspects are really important.”
