Formula 1 legend Sir Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90 following a long battle with illness, his wife has confirmed on Sunday.

The Briton is widely considered as the best driver never to win the F1 championship having finished second four times between 1955 and 1958.

In total, Moss won 16 times in 67 Grand Prix entries between 1951-1961 competing for teams like Mercedes, Maserati, Vanwall, Cooper and Lotus.

Announcing the news, his wife Lady Moss told the Daily Mail: "He died as he lived, looking wonderful. He simply tired in the end and he just closed his beautiful eyes and that was that."

Moss competed across a range of series during his career, including the Mille Miglia, which he won in 1955 for Mercedes, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing second overall twice and the Monte Carlo Rally, again finishing second at his first attempt in 1952.

Overall, Sir Stirling would win 212 of 529 races he entered during his career.
