Carlos Sainz is expected to be confirmed as a 2021 Ferrari driver on Thursday after a last bid by McLaren to keep him failed.

The Spaniard quickly emerged as the favourite to replace Sebastian Vettel after it was announced the German and Italian team had agreed not to extend his contract.

McLaren though didn't give up in trying to retain Sainz, who finished sixth in the Drivers standings last year, reportedly offering him a salary increase and hoping to pending Mercedes engine switch in 2021 could lure him to stay.

Spain's Marca though says the prestige of racing for Ferrari is too much for Carlos to turn down.

Another hint that Sainz is indeed the man heading to Maranello came from Piero Ferrari, who suggesting someone just like the 25-year-old would be ideal alongside Charles Leclerc.

“It is correct to support Leclerc because he is a very talented, intelligent boy who grew up in our Ferrari Academy," he told Italian news agency ANSA.

“Support another young man? I would definitely like to do it, but Ferrari is not the place for a young man coming from Formula 2.

“Perhaps a young man who already has a few years of experience would be much better.”
