Mick Schumacher is focused on being "smart" as he bids to wrap up the Formula 2 title across the next two weekends in Bahrain.

The German is 22 points ahead of fellow Ferrari junior Callum Ilott after a remarkable run of consistency has seen Schumacher finish in the top six in the last 12 races, including two wins and eight podiums.

However, with no races since Sochi back in September, the son of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher knows he can take nothing for granted ahead of the final two rounds.

“We still have 96 points I think to give away so obviously everything is open, the top six in the championship still can win the championship,” he was quoted by MotorsportWeek.

“Our goal is to just focus on ourselves, build the best car possible around ourselves, work as well as we did in the last races as a team.

“It is just important to keep my focus, keep improving myself, keep learning and just go for it.”

On how he intends to approach the next fortnight, Schumacher added: “I think we have to be smart for the last two rounds.

“Obviously if it is the right moment to attack, we will attack, if it is the right moment to defend, we will defend. It’s about understanding the situation and working from there.”

All of this comes as speculation suggests Schumacher is already guaranteed promotion to F1 next year at Haas, where he's expected to team up with Russian Nikita Mazepin.

And one of the American outfit's outgoing drivers, Kevin Magnussen, may have confirmed that is the case.

“I think depending on who they announce, there are some young drivers out there that really are good drivers," he told Sky Sports'  Natalie Pinkham.

"I think Schumacher has got to be on the list. I don’t know these things, neither Guenther [Steiner] or Gene [Haas] tell me any of this but I’m assuming that Schumacher is on the list.

"I’ve met him and talked to him and he seems like a very bright young lad and obviously he’s a big talent, he’s leading the F2 championship and driving brilliantly.

“So I think he, certainly, is going to be good, whatever he brings in terms of deals with him. I’m sure just in the driving and his ability, I think he’s going to be great for the team.”
