Daniel Ricciardo is free to race in the Bahrain Grand Prix after recovering from Covid-19, McLaren has confirmed.

Last week, the Australian missed the entire second pre-season test in the Middle East through illness, testing positive for Covid on Friday.

Though McLaren was confident Ricciardo would be ready for this weekend, replacements had been lined up including Alpine reserve and Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri.

But on Wednesday, in a statement... "McLaren F1 Team confirms that after testing positive for Covid-19 during last week, Daniel has now returned a number of negative tests and will therefore return to the paddock on Thursday ready to compete in this weekend’s Bahrain GP.

“Daniel has been feeling better each day as he continued to recover while in isolation following local regulations in Bahrain.”

A tough weekend still lies ahead for Ricciardo, who has only completed one and a half days of running in the new 2022 car.

While McLaren also have an uphill task in Bahrain after brake issues meant the team completed the least laps of any team last week with 200.
