Lewis Hamilton claimed victory at the Canadian Grand Prix after a controversial penalty for Sebastian Vettel.

It was the Ferrari driver who crossed the line first in Montreal, but he would have five seconds added to his time for an unsafe re-entry to the track after a mistake at Turn 4.

As the German ran wide across the grass, he would push the Mercedes against the wall when he recovered with that move crossing the line in the opinion of the stewards.

Vettel would still claim second ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc as the Monegasque claimed his second career podium.

Race Recap

A clean start saw little movement at the front with Nico Hulkenberg passing Valtteri Bottas for the only change at the front.

There was contact down the field as Alex Albon was squeezed between Perez and Giovinazzi losing his front wing.

High degradation on the soft tyres led Gasly to pit early attempting to undercut Ricciardo for fourth.

The Renault driver would respond to stay ahead as Lando Norris, who had started eighth, suffered a rear suspension failure exiting the final chicane forcing him into retirement.

As the yellow cars held Gasly and Bottas at bay, it would allow the front three to pull a lead at the front with around four-seconds covering them.

Max Verstappen, starting on the hard tyre, produced some nice moves early on to move up the field behind Bottas after his tough qualifying.

Eventually, Vettel pits and would open up a four-second lead as Mercedes delay Hamilton's stop, with a longer strategy hurting Leclerc as he drops out of contention.

Bottas pits and immediately closes on Ricciardo for fourth, some very aggressive defence on the straight would keep the Mercedes at bay for a few laps before the Australian was eventually passed into the final chicane.

At the front, Hamilton is faster than Vettel on the hard tyre and closes to within DRS range.

A mistake at Turn 4 sees the Ferrari run wide across the grass almost pushing Lewis into the wall on the exit.

This would be the pivotal as the stewards gave the Ferrari a five-second penalty leading to a chase in the final 12 laps with Hamilton looking to stay within the gap.

That he would do to claim a fifth win of 2019 ahead of the two Ferrari's to extend his lead in the championship to 30 points over teammate Valtteri Bottas.

That's after the Finn would claim fourth ahead of Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top six in Renault's best performance of the year by far.

Teammate Nico Hulkenberg was seventh as Gasly struggled to eighth in the second Red Bull.

A strong race from Lance Stroll saw the local favourite come through the field to ninth with he and Daniil Kvyat producing nice moves on Carlos Sainz in the closing laps to round out the top 10.

The Spaniard would just miss out on points in 11th ahead of Sergio Perez in 12th.

Down the order, Kevin Magnussen described the race as the most miserable he had ever had to finish 17th as Haas' tyre troubles bit hard once again.
