Sebastian Vettel has jokingly suggested Formula 1 race on the old Osterriechring to help Ferrari beat Mercedes at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based team remain the overwhelming favourites to continue their 100% win record at the Red Bull Ring with the technical second half of the lap expected to suit their car.

Not only that but the German acknowledged that Lewis Hamilton, who has won six of the opening eight races, is in a league of his own.

“Let’s stop kidding ourselves, Lewis is playing with us. I risked everything to do the fastest lap, but Lewis did the same lap time on worn and blistering tyres," he said post-race.

Asked how Ferrari could address the performance deficit for this weekend, Vettel began: “In the end, we have to find more downforce, then we will be able to use the tyres better.

"Maybe we should drive on the old Osterreichring, where there aren’t many corners.

“It is difficult to get everything right on this track even though it’s a very short lap. It is crucial to get a good qualifying position in order to have a good race.

“It is definitely one I want to win. We have been on the podium in the past, so now we will be back to try and win."

Vettel's current winless streak extends back to the Belgian Grand Prix last year but despite that, the four-time champion is remaining upbeat.

"I am not frustrated," he insisted. "It is not like we had 15 races to win and we didn’t win them, then I’d be frustrated.

"We did the best we could and I think arguably this year I think we could have had two shots so far and one obviously Charles had a troubled race.

"I think it all depends when looking back but generally, I’m pretty happy with the races I’ve had.

"You always think you could do a bit more here and there, but it is not as if we have dominated the past 15 races."
