Valtteri Bottas claims the risk of crashing is 'more exciting' than having a run-off area despite his off in Austrian GP practice.

The Finn slid wide midway through Turn 6 only for his Mercedes to swing the other way across the gravel and into the barrier on Friday afternoon in Spielberg.

But while it now leaves his weekend compromised having lost out on a long run, Bottas says it made a change to suffer consequences for his error.

“It makes a difference. I have to say, even though I crashed, I do prefer to be penalised for your mistakes,” he was quoted by Crash.net.

“It makes it a little bit more exciting, that’s how it should be, and the tiniest error will cost a lot here with aggressive kerbs and run-offs and everything. I think that’s the way to go.”

But when the car was on track, Bottas was happy with how his pace.

“This morning we had a bit of an issue with the engine but still found clear direction on the car setup where to go," he explained.

"[We] made pretty big changes for FP2 and felt a lot better until obviously, I had the shunt.

“Before that, I was feeling quite nice, so overall, a good feeling but some other teams are quick as well."
