Kubica frustrated as Williams upgrades fail to stick in Germany

Robert Kubica but a frustrated figure once again as Williams struggled to test their latest upgrades during German GP practice.

As the British team looks to make some progress towards catching the midfield, the morning offered hope as the Pole sat 0.6s faster than teammate George Russell and just 0.2s behind Antonio Giovinazzi's Alfa Romeo.

However, that pace wouldn't stick in the afternoon with Kubica explaining the new parts were also not sticking to the car.

“We didn’t have an easy day today, compromised already on the installation lap,” he claimed. “We will have to revise everything and fix some parts in order [that] they stay attached to the car.

“It’s the second weekend in a row that something is breaking down and it was very important for us to do our programme which we set up, unfortunately, we were influenced by this straight away.

“We hope we can fix it, we were a bit too fragile, that’s how it is.

“We have to make sure everything will stay attached to the car and hopefully tomorrow will be better.”

Asked if he got an indication as to the success of the upgrades, Kubica claimed an assessment was also pointless.

“The conditions are completely different, the track is different, the tyres are operating in different windows so it’s impossible to judge [the new upgrades]," he said.

“If you ask me to compare Silverstone where it was 18C with 38C [on Friday at Hockenheim] and at a completely different track it’s impossible to compare unless you have a magic ball.”

As a result of the problems seen on Friday, Williams confirmed on Saturday that Kubica would be switched to the spare chassis for the rest of the weekend.

“We found some damage while rebuilding Robert’s car overnight which was not repairable at the track,” a Williams representative told Formula1.com.

“We decided to change to the spare chassis for the rest of the weekend.”
