Haas team boss Guenther Steiner says Robert Kubica is welcome to join as a development driver in 2020.

In Singapore, the Pole announced he had decided not to continue with Williams next year in order to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

This after a difficult first year back in Formula 1 since 2010, which has seen Kubica often struggle to match his rookie teammate George Russell.

"Anything is possible and we are talking with him, I always talk with a lot of people, try to make things better, but I don't know yet [if a deal is possible]," Steiner revealed this past weekend.

"I need still to speak with Robert if he wants to do it now he has decided he is leaving Williams, but I don't know his other plans.

"He's got a lot of experience, and he is known to be one of the best of test and simulator drivers around. I've never worked with him, but I've got a lot of people who worked with him, and they all respect him a lot," he added.

"I think he cannot do a full-time job, or he doesn't want to. But he is a good benchmark."

It is understood that Kubica is keen to continue racing and has been linked to a DTM seat for next year, also it is understood he doesn't want to be restricted to just the simulator in any development role.

"With no testing next year we need to do it because otherwise there is no point to put someone in the simulator who cannot make a correlation. We need to do tests or free practices. That's all part of it," Steiner said, confirming he would get track time.

"But I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here. It [the discussion] is in an infant stage, but it is possible."
