Gasly unfazed by 2019 testing crashes: ‘I’d rather crash in a test than in a race’

Pierre Gasly isn’t going to change his approach for the upcoming winter tests despite crashing twice last year.

The Frenchman instantly put himself under pressure at Red Bull with two accidents which actually hampered the team’s program due to a lack of spare parts.

This year, Gasly’s situation is slightly different back at the rebranded AlphaTauri and he certainly appears unlikely to not go and explore the limits of his new car in Barcelona.

“I will have many more crashes in my career. I had plenty in karting and it never stopped me to go fast,” he told Motorsport.

“In a way, I didn’t crash that many times I think last year during the season and testing in a way is also done for that – I’d rather crash in a test than during a race.

“So, no, I won’t change my approach.

“Of course I need to be careful, it’s not something you want and going into testing I want to do all the tests clean,” Gasly noted

“But also driving F1 cars with more than 1000bhp and going at crazy speeds, you know there is always a risk for things to happen.

“But, no, of course we know the target for the test is to do as many laps as we can, develop the car and I’ll do everything on my side to have the best test possible.”

The first test gets underway this Wednesday at the Spanish circuit, which has become the preferred testing location in recent years.

And the room for errors and lost time is minimal in 2020 with just six days of running before the first race weekend in Australia, which is less than a month away!
