Lewis Hamilton stated Formula 1 is witnessing “history in the making” after leading another Mercedes 1-2 at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The world champion put a tricky qualifying behind him and emerged in front as he, Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel went wheel-to-wheel into Turn 1 at the start.

From that point, it was a simple tour de force from Hamilton as he pulled a 10-second lead over his teammate at one stage before streaking clear again after a Safety Car.

His 76th career win puts the Briton back on top in the championship by seven points, having also claimed the point for fastest lap, but it was his Mercedes performance which Lewis couldn’t praise highly enough.

“I put it down to this incredible team. This is history in the making to have five one-twos,” he said. “Very proud to be a part of that and very proud of everyone’s hard work at the track.

“It’s definitely been a hard first four races. It’s a great car but we don’t always get along. I was delighted to settle our differences and I’m really happy for the whole team.”

Reflecting back on the only real flashpoint at the first corner, Hamilton added: “It was an interesting start, we were very very close.

“I saw the red car go around both of us. I had no idea whether they were further ahead, but it wasn’t a replay of Baku, at least.”

Then on his remarkable pace at the restart after the Safety Car, which would include his fastest lap, Hamilton admitted it was about seizing the opportunity.

“We’d just had a pitstop so I wanted to keep the tyres warm. I knew those first couple of laps on these new tyres would be our best chance [to get that fastest lap],” he explained.

“I’ve not had the fastest lap all year, so it was about time.”
