Nico Hulkenberg has called out Renault by suggesting the team has made little progress over the past 18 months.
2019 was seen as the year the French manufacturer would break out of the midfield and potentially start trying to bridge the divide between the top three teams and the rest.
Instead, they’ve gone backwards having scored 42 points less at this stage of the season than in 2018 with Nico Hulkenberg only scoring four top 10s in 12 races.
“It’s a tough one,” the German told RaceFans. “It’s obviously quite below our expectations and our targets.
“I think we need to ask ourselves some serious questions and review a couple of things internally, but there’s been far more lows than highs, unfortunately.
“Not really satisfying.”

Such has been their struggles that McLaren, a customer team, has stretched ahead in the Constructors’ standings with a massive 43 points between them.
And while it’s clear than gains have been with the engine compared to last year, Hulkenberg has questioned the progress of the chassis since the start of last year.
“[We need to look at] how we go about things and where we’ve come the last 18 months with the car,” he continued.
“What we’ve been doing and the fact it’s had not that much of an effect.
“We need to ask ourselves how we go about it in the future to make sure updates will really bring some yield and bring us forward.”
