Pierre Gasly set the quickest time for Red Bull before rain curtailed action in second practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Drops of rain fell throughout the session but drivers were able to get some early running on the slicks before the weather worsened.

A red flag would disrupt the drier spell too though, as Alex Albon put two wheels on the grass approaching the final corner and slid helplessly into the barrier.

Once green again, Valtteri Bottas tried to make up for a lack of running by getting some laps in on the medium tyre.

It would be Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton that set the initial pace on the hard compound as the teams split their approach.

Max Verstappen would displace the Briton at the top on his second flying lap using the medium rubber before Gasly went 0.055s clear with a 1m17.854s on the soft compound Pirelli.

On the contrary, Ferrari struggled on the slicks early on, with Charles Leclerc only seventh on the medium and Sebastian Vettel down in 13th.

After Sainz’s water pressure issue in the morning, there was also more problems at McLaren as a suspected hydraulics issue ended Lando Norris’ day early.

Soon then the rain got hard enough to force all teams back into the garage, with a frustrating period of mostly silence as conditions stayed semi-dry.

Carlos Sainz took the risk to try out the slicks again but it was then the track got wetter and would allow for a 20-minute stint of running on the intermediates to close out.

Max Verstappen was clearly the fastest driver during that run with Red Bull having to slow him down in a bid to preserve the tyre.

With no team getting into a qualifying or race simulation, it means we head into the weekend blind as to the relative performance of the top three teams.

And with the different compounds at play, the final results below are also pretty useless…
