Sebastian Vettel posted the quickest time as rain limited the action in second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Heavy downpours between sessions left the track very wet at the start of second practice, with Pierre Gasly, who missed all of the dry morning with an engine issue, the only driver to venture out initially.
Likewise Kimi Raikkonen, who handed his car to Robert Kubica for Practice 1, also turned his first laps of the weekend in the difficult conditions.
One team who notably struggled during the rain-affected qualifying in Austria last weekend, Racing Point, also capitalised on the opportunity to complete some wet-weather running.
And it was Lance Stroll, who is considered strong in the wet, who led the pace initially in the 1m42s, some 26 seconds off the pace from the morning.
With a steady rain meaning conditions didn’t particularly improve, Renault were the odd ones out in sending their drivers out on intermediates for a reconnaissance lap.
More teams also ventured out with Sebastian Vettel going fastest ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who was immediately one of the fastest drivers on track in the Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton ventured out for a solitary lap on the intermediates to test the conditions and that triggered others to follow, notably the two Ferraris.
But while some sections of track were able to cope with the shallow-grooved tyre, others were not and lap times didn’t improve, causing many to bail back into the garage.
As a result, Vettel remained fastest with a 1m40.464s, two-tenths clear of Bottas’ Mercedes in second.
Carlos Sainz set the fastest first sector on his best lap for McLaren but would eventually finish 1.3s slower in third.
The two Racing Point’s were fourth and fifth after their decent stints on the full wet earlier in the session.
Gasly complained of engine braking issues and a burning smell in his repaired AlphaTauri but would still continue running to sixth.
Max Verstappen went out for one flying lap on the full wets late on, claiming seventh in the Red Bull.
Romain Grosjean, Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Leclerc completed the top 10.
In total, only 13 drivers would set a time in the afternoon with Daniil Kvyat slowest.
One reason for the reduced running is the threat of further rain across the weekend, with teams having to save their wet tyres just in case.
