Formula E driver Pascal Wehrlein will retain his simulator role at Ferrari during the upcoming season, it has been confirmed.

The German was snapped up by the Scuderia upon recommendation from Sebastian Vettel after leaving the Mercedes driver program at the end of 2018.

And with two seasons in F1 under his belt, at Manor in 2016 and Sauber in 2017, Wehrlein gives Ferrari a strong driver in an increasingly crucial position behind the scenes at Maranello.

"We still have experienced drivers for [2020] in the simulator," said team boss Mattia Binotto via F1i.com.

"Pascal is staying with us but we’ve got as well other drivers who maybe are not so much experienced in Formula 1, but have done many years in the simulator.

"Our simulator drivers are very well integrated in the team. The simulator is more and more important, that’s why we will invest on the simulator in the future."

In addition to the testing of developmental parts, Wehrlein will also be based back in Italy during race weekends, completing hundreds of laps in the simulator to fine-tune setup when the action on the track stops.
