Giovinazzi: There is a chance at 'dream' Ferrari move in 2021

Antonio Giovinazzi does believe he has a chance of achieving his "dream" move to Ferrari in 2021.

The Italian gradually improved during his first full Formula 1 season at Alfa Romeo last year but did struggle to make a significant impact, scoring just 14 points.

In fact, team boss Fred Vasseur admitted it was only Giovinazzi's performance at his home race at Monza which ultimately saved his seat for 2020.

But with Sebastian Vettel out of contract at Ferrari after this year, the 26-year-old still believes he can prove himself worthy of a promotion to the Scuderia.

“I would be lying if I said I do not dream of Ferrari," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The most important thing for me is to fully concentrate on my work, but I know that if I perform well in 2020, I will have a chance.

“I already have a great relationship with Charles [Leclerc]. We talk a lot and go to the same restaurants in Monaco.”

Like Leclerc, Giovinazzi also has plenty of experience with Ferrari, having been reserve driver during his two years off the grid.

And the most obvious way he feels he can impress the bosses at Maranello is to beat their former driver and now his teammate, Kimi Raikkonen.

“Beating Kimi is one of my goals for this season, but not the only one,” Giovinazzi added.

“It will be a crucial season, but it’s always like that when there is a confirmation or a promotion."

Last year, the 2007 world champion outscored Antonio by 29 points after scoring points in eight of the first 12 races and the former GP2 runner-up admitted their early relationship was almost non-existent.

“He (Raikkonen) doesn’t say much, and at first he did not help me because his results were better and it seems like there was a big gap," he said.

“But he was an important benchmark for me to grow up in a professional way.”
