Robert Kubica has praised his Williams teammate George Russell, claiming he deserves to be racing higher up the Formula 1 grid.

While the Pole might have scored the British team’s only point this season, the rookie has dominated Kubica, outqualifying him at every race and only finishing behind him twice.

Russell’s potential, however, is being largely masked due to Williams’ lack of performance and Kubica hopes that situation changes soon.

“George is incredibly talented, everyone knows how fast he is,” he told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

“Of course I will be compared to him although that’s hard to compare as we are at a completely different stage in our career.

“George deserves a car that he can drive in the front. He has the skills, he showed it in GP3 and Formula 2. I’m not worried about that.

“It’s only a matter of time before he sits in a competitive car.”

Given the sometimes considerable gap between Russell and Kubica, it has put the one-time Grand Prix winner’s future under threat but Williams isn’t ruling him out for now.

“We are looking at the 2020 seat and there is a handful of candidates,” deputy team boss Claire Williams revealed.

“Robert has done a good job as well this year, it hasn’t been easy for him.

“The car isn’t what he would like it to be or what anyone would like it to be so it hasn’t been a good platform for him to indicate how strong he can be.

“It’s something that’s under consideration at the moment but I’m in no rush to make any decision.

“We’ve got to make the right decision going into next year.”
