Charles Leclerc admits the damage was done in qualifying as he retired from his home race on Sunday.

Starting P15, the Monegasque made two bold overtakes on Lando Norris at the hairpin and Romain Grosjean at Rasscasse.

But the third time wasn’t lucky as another attempt at Rasscasse on Nico Hulkenberg saw Leclerc hit the inside barrier and pick-up puncture.

The debris would cause a Safety Car and the damage proved too much as he pulled in to the pits.

“It was very difficult and, as I said before the race, I had to take a lot of risks, which we did,” Leclerc told Sky Sports.

“It was fun at the beginning. Unfortunately, it ended in disaster but that’s a bit Monaco.”

The 21-year-old is yet to finish his home race in two attempts as the Ferrari driver suffered his worst weekend of the season.

“Unfortunately when we’re starting 15th, which is not our real pace [or] position, it was difficult to come back from that today,” he concluded.
