Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, recently had an incredibly emotional experience when he got to drive Ayrton Senna’s iconic 1990 McLaren MP4/5B at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
This special moment allowed Hamilton to connect with his childhood hero and pay tribute to his legacy in Senna’s home country.
Hamilton took the V10-powered car for a spin around the Interlagos circuit, a track deeply intertwined with Senna’s legendary career. To further honor Senna, Hamilton even replicated a famous gesture, pulling over to take a Brazilian flag from a marshal, just as Senna had done in his 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix victory.
“It’s very, very emotional, naturally,” Hamilton expressed.
“I was just revisiting my childhood as I was watching [Ayrton] race here as a kid. Hearing that sound and watching him drive here, winning that race, I just couldn’t believe that I just had that chance to do that, and it was really the greatest honor of my career.”
Hamilton’s deep connection to Brazil goes beyond this recent tribute. He won his first F1 world championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2008, marking a significant milestone in his career. Two years ago, Brazil further recognized his impact by granting him honorary citizenship.
This emotional experience highlights the enduring legacy of Ayrton Senna and the profound impact he continues to have on the world of Formula 1. Hamilton’s heartfelt tribute serves as a reminder of Senna’s greatness and the special bond between the two legendary drivers.
