Andre Lotterer has secured Porsche’s first pole position in Formula E with a stunning lap in Mexico.
Lotterer was the second-fastest driver in group qualifying which Mitch Evans ended fastest and secured an additional point for the Jaguar team. Evans ended qualifying in second, but he ended the session 0.063 behind Lotterer’s 1:07.922.
Pascal Wehrlein qualified in third but will start at the back of the grid due to his gearbox component change. The Mahindra driver will also have the serve a drive-through penalty during the race to serve the remainder of his 40 place grid drop.
Therefore, Nyck De Vries will start the race from third after qualifying in fourth for Mercedes. Sebastien Buemi qualified fifth with Sam Bird in sith. Bird came from group one in qualifying which was a stunning achievement for the Brit.
Robin Frijns missed out on Super Pole as Buemi displaced him and the Dutchmen qualified seventh but will start the race from sixth after Wehrelin’s penalty. Nico Muller put in an excellent qualifying performance for Dragon as he qualified in eighth.
Reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne qualified in ninth but will start from eighth place. Vergne is just ahead of his teammate Antonio Felix Da Costa who qualified in 10th.
Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne qualified in 11th place ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Oliver Rowland qualified 13th in the second Nissan car.
Jerome D’Ambrosio qualified in 14th but will start at the back of the grid after his penalty for changing a component in the gearbox.
Brendon Hartley qualified in 15th ahead of Neel Jani in the second Porsche. Lucas DI Grassi qualified in 17th but will start 15th. The Brazilian has won three of the four races in Mexico, but he will struggle to achieve victory today.
BMW had a horrible qualifying. The current teams’ championship leaders qualified in 18th with Maximillian Gunther and 20th with Alexander Sims. James Calado will start in between the two BMW drivers.
Felipe Massa had a horrible lap and qualified in 22nd with Ma Qing Hua outqualifying Oliver Turvey due to the Brit coming to a halt on his flying lap.
Daniel Abt did not take part in the session due to his crash in FP1. The German is on his way back from the hospital and should start the race, but he will start from the second to last row ahead of the Mahindras after their penalty.
