A key decision on the proposed Miami Grand Prix in 2020 is expected next week in a vote of the City Commission.

Since taking over the sport in 2017, Liberty Media has been pushing hard for a second race in America with Florida emerging as the preferred option.

Plans for a race this year had to be postponed, however, after a vote was deferred in the face of local opposition.

Since then, F1 hosted a demo event in Miami before last year’s US GP to introduce the sport to the city and representatives from both Liberty and race promoters have been working hard to change minds.

The most important mind if that of the Bayfront Park Management Trust which owns at least some of the area where the street circuit would pass through. And now there appears to be enough confidence to proceed.

“The City Commission wishes to authorize the City Manager to execute the Host City Agreement and the Park Use Agreements for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, between the City of Miami, the Bayfront Park Management Trust, South Florida Racing, LLC. and Formula 1 World Championship Limited, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney,” the resolution that will be up for vote read.

If agreed, it should pave the way for the race to take place and join Vietnam as new additions to the calendar to start the next decade.
