Marc Marquez bounced back from his mechanical failure at Silverstone, taking top spot honours in FP1, four tenths clear of the rest of the field. Michele Pirro – Ducati test rider, finished the session in a surprise second, with Andrea Dovizioso completing the top three.
There were a number of crashes, including Johann Zarco, Bradley Smith, both Team Suzuki Ecstar riders – Alex Rins and Andrea Iannone and Aprilia team mates Aleix Espargaro and Sam Lowes.
