Moto3 returned to the track for the first qualifying session of the day. Gabriel Rodrigo (RBA BOE Racing Team) took his first ever pole in a bit of a crash fest – one of which included a tangle between him and Jakub Kornfeil (Peugeot MC Saxoprint).
Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) crashed out in the opening minutes of the session, but did manage to get back on track later on. But the stand out off was from Rodrigo himself. He and Kornfeil collided very early into the session, and Rodrigo was sent to the medical centre. Despite being out for most of the session, he came back and snatched pole from Romano Fenati (Marinelli Rivacold Snipers) over the checkered flag.
But what was truly stunning in this session, was the amount of riders hanging around on the pit exit waiting for a tow. Rules have recently been introduced to try and deter the riders from doing it, but they really don’t seem to learn. With so many riders being hit with twelve place grid penalties since the rules were introduced, it shows that race direction are really serious about this. Just a shame that the riders themselves aren’t…
But when all was said and done, Rodrigo took a phenomenal pole, from Fenati and Juanfran Guevara (RBA BOE Racing Team).
