Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is stirring the pot over Mercedes’ future in Formula 1, suggesting “a lot is happening”.

Last week saw reports in German media that current motorsport boss Toto Wolff is poised to announce his departure from that role at the end of 2020.

That would then be a prelude to Mercedes’ parent company Daimler pulling the plug on the works F1 team at the end of this year and potentially selling to Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll.

Those reports were later rejected as “irresponsible and unfounded” by Daimler, who insist their intention is to continue the Mercedes team with Wolff at the helm.

But that hasn’t stopped Marko from claiming he knows otherwise.

“Let’s wait and see what developments are going on at Mercedes,” the Red Bull chief reportedly told the Osterreich newspaper.

“I hear that a lot is happening there in terms of personnel.”

At the same time, there is also the futures of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to decide, with Sebastian Vettel and George Russell being linked mainly to the Finn’s seat.

Mercedes though have said they will take their time in making that decision, something some also believe could be a sign that something bigger is going on behind the scenes.

Regardless of what happens with the Brackley-based team, however…

“If they’re still there, that’s fine. We will want to beat them,” Marko added. “If they are not, it will be a different team.”
