Carlos Sainz has used Fernando Alonso’s exit and lack of desire to return to Formula 1 as proof that change is needed.
The double world champion was replaced by his fellow Spaniard at McLaren for 2019, after deciding to focus on his other motorsport interests in WEC and make a second attempt at the Indianapolis 500.
That left Sainz to carry the flag for his country and continue the legacy Alonso started, although he insists that is not a pressure he feels.
“I don’t get in the car to prove something to others, but only by thinking of doing good for myself,” he said to Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Being the only Spanish driver is a positive responsibility.

“Of course, F1 should have the best drivers in the world and Fernando is one of the best, if not the best ever,” Sainz stated.
“Therefore it is clear that it is missing [one of the best], but the reason for his farewell is the same for which I and many others are suffering.”
That reason, the inability to fight for any position higher than seventh without a problem impacting a Red Bull, Mercedes or Ferrari.
“I deserve credit as many other drivers deserve it, I am thinking of Ricciardo, Perez or Hulkenberg,” Sainz continued.
“We should all have the chance to fight for at least one podium in every race.
“Instead, at the moment, this opportunity is reserved for those driving for the top three top teams.
“The car makes too much difference and it shows that F1 still has a lot to do to improve the competition and entertainment.”
