Less than a day after announcing the cancellation of an engine deal with Honda, Sauber has confirmed they will remain with Ferrari in 2018, using their most up to date specification.

This year the Swiss team, who mark 20 years since the start of their partnership with the Italian team in 2017, has been using year-old power units from the Maranello outfit with the anticipation of a move to become Honda’s first customer team next year.

However, the lack of performance and reliability the Japanese manufacturer has shown with McLaren caused a rift between owners Longbow Finance and former team boss Monisha Kaltenborn, who organised the deal.

Confirming the continuation of their Ferrari partnership, which could open the door the likes of Antonio Giovinazzi or current Formula 2 championship leader Charles Leclerc to make the move up next year, new team boss Fred Vasseur said: “I am very pleased to confirm that we will continue to work with Scuderia Ferrari as our engine supplier in form of a multi-year agreement.

“The shared experience between the Sauber F1 Team and Ferrari has built a strong foundation, which will allow us to move forward swiftly and efficiently, also in terms of the development of the 2018 car.

“I am convinced that together we can achieve the results which reflect the passion and determination that is, and always has been, behind the Sauber F1 Team.”
