Fresh doubt has been cast over Toro Rosso’s bid to sign Alexander Albon after he was named as a Nissan driver on Formula E’s official entry list for Season 5.
Red Bull bosses have been locked in talks with the Japanese manufacturer to try and secure the British-Thai racer, whom they want to partner Daniil Kvyat at the junior squad next season.
Albon had already signed a two-year deal with Nissan in the all-electric series, however, and it appears he is still expected to race when the new championship begins in Riyadh next month.
This comes after reports Brendon Hartley had already been told of his departure from Toro Rosso following next weekend’s finale in Abu Dhabi but even that now seems less certain with alternatives to Albon unknown should he remain in Formula E.
One man who is hoping Albon gets the seat though is Charles Leclerc, who competed and beat the 22-year-old in F3, GP3 and F2, racing with him at ART Grand Prix in GP3.
“I’m not sure yet if he’s not going to make it, but for me Alex Albon, he was really strong. I really hope he will take the seat he is rumoured [to be taking],” the Monegasque said.
