Max Verstappen has welcomed Red Bull’s call to retain Alex Albon for 2020.

This week it was confirmed the British-born Thai, who only got promoted back in Belgium, would be kept after scoring top-six finishes in every race so far.

Given a strong teammate is likely to be essential to any potential championship challenge next season, it is a decision which does have consequences for Verstappen.

“He’s a nice guy and I think for him the last 12 months have been a bit of a rollercoaster!” the Dutchman commented on Thursday.

“He’s very laid back, very relaxed, people like him in the team. He’s easygoing, which helps.

“He’s also quick and doing his job, he’s getting the points, so I think it was the smartest way of continuing.”

Albon’s predecessor Pierre Gasly and even Nico Hulkenberg were considered possible alternatives and though he is considered the lead driver, Verstappen insisted he had no role.

“At the end of the day it’s not up to me to judge his performance,” Max stated. “It’s Christian [Horner] and Helmut [Marko] who make the decisions.”
