Sebastian Vettel questioned if stewards decisions, like that which cost him victory in Canada, were harming Formula 1.
The Ferrari driver was furious after being penalised five seconds for running wide and pushing Lewis Hamilton against the wall at Turn 4 as he rejoined the track.
Refusing to park in the traditional top-three area he would then would through the paddock before eventually making it to the podium only after he had moved the second place board in front of Hamilton’s car.
Over the radio, his lambasted the stewards insisting he couldn’t see the Briton as he recovered onto the track and was unable to control his Ferrari anymore than he did.
Then speaking to the media he would continue his tirade.
“It’s not making our sport popular is it with these kind of decisions?” Vettel said. “People want to see us race and that was I think racing. I hope the people come back, that’s the main thing obviously.
“They’re the reason why we’re able to put this show on and build these incredible cars. It’s just a shame when we have all these funny decisions.
“It’s not about the title now. I think we really deserved to win today. I think that’s our opinion. I think the people’s opinion out there as well… It’s a bit weird now, to be honest. I don’t know what else to say.”
As for the battle with Hamilton that took place throughout the 70 laps, the 31-year-old was a little more positive,
“I really enjoyed the race, I enjoyed the crowd, every lap seeing them cheer me on, especially around the hairpin. It was very intense, Lewis was a bit quicker throughout the race but we were able to stay ahead,” he explained.
“For the rest, I think I’ve said enough. You should ask the people what they think. I think we had a great show. Lewis showed some great respect. Ask the people.”
The people did make their voices heard with boos directed towards Hamilton on the podium, but Vettel quickly stepped in to defend the Briton.
“The people shouldn’t boo at Lewis, if anything they should boo at these funny decisions,” he concluded.
