Vettel stands by ‘bring back f***ing V12’s’ jab after MGU-K failure

Sebastian Vettel admits his jab at today’s Formula 1 engines was merely reactive after retiring from the Russian Grand Prix.

The German was heard on the radio saying “bring back f***ing V12’s” after his race was ended by the MGU-K component of the current V6 hybrid engine in Sochi.

Of course, plenty within F1 would probably agree with him, but speaking after the race he realises that comment wasn’t serious.

“Obviously there is no option [to do that]. These power units are very complex from an engineering point of view very fascinating, but obviously I have my stand on it,” Vettel said.

“I don’t think it comes with a great upside for us racing and people watching.

“At that moment, obviously it was very bitter because up to that point I thought I drove very well and it was looking like a good afternoon.

“The first reaction when the car breaks down is not always the happiest one.”

Sunday marked Vettel’s first retirement of the year, with the resulting Virtual Safety Car allowing Lewis Hamilton to take the lead and continue Mercedes’ 100% win record in Sochi.
