Vietnam could still host its inaugural Formula 1 race in 2020, with local officials hopeful of a November date.

The Grand Prix on a semi-permanent street circuit in Hanoi was set to take place for the first time back in April but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For almost three months, however, there have been no new cases of the coronavirus and, though travel restrictions are still in place, the chairman of Hanoi, Nguyen Duc Chung, is keen to see the race go ahead.

“We are assessing all virus-related issues and will discuss them with the organisers. Hopefully the race can be resumed by end-November,” he was quoted by Reuters.

Currently, F1 has only confirmed an eight-race calendar for 2020 and plans to announce the full schedule have been delayed due to uncertainty over the US, Mexico and Brazilian GP’s.

China too was considered the only realistic Asian race to take place before Vietnam has seemingly re-emerged as an option.

In the meantime, more European rounds are expected, with Mugello and Portimao considered highly likely, and a doubleheader in Bahrain has also been suggested before the finale in Abu Dhabi in December.
