Jacques Villeneuve has again questioned Robert Kubica’s Formula 1 return after a disastrous Canadian Grand Prix.

The Polish driver finished a lap down on teammate George Russell and claimed post-race he was struggling simply to keep his Williams on track at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

It was the worst performance in a season where Kubica has failed to beat Russell in the first seven races, and the 1997 world champion was quick to criticise.

“I was not a fan of him returning,” he was quoted by PlanetF1. “For me, F1 is for the elite, it is for the absolute best.

“The only thing that counts is that Robert is clearly slower than his teammate, who is, after all, a debutant.

“Results matter here.”

Recent speculation had linked Williams reserve and F2 championship leader Nicholas Latifi to Kubica’s seat and the Canadian did drive in place of the 35-year-old in FP1 in Montreal.

Throughout the year, however, Robert has argued his car hasn’t been the same as Russell’s, this despite the pair actually swapping cars in Spain with the Briton still proving faster.

Asked if it was possible, Villeneuve said: “I do not know, I’m not in the team. You can not see everything from the outside.

“But such situations in Formula 1 are not likely to happen. These cars are very similar to each other.

“I do not know, maybe the settings don’t match Robert’s style, and they suit Russell.

“So yes, of course, it can be.”
