Reaching 100 wins in Formula 1 shows Lewis Hamilton is the sport’s best ever driver, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff claims.

After a strong start with three wins in the opening five races, the seven-time world champion has had to wait to achieve his century, scoring No.99 at Silverstone and then No.100 in Sochi just over a week ago.

Reflecting on that milestone, Wolff believes that while the initial recognition will soon pass, in the long-term Hamilton’s success will be more appreciated.

“We are witnesses of a career that is just amazing. The 100th race victory is just mind-blowing,” said the Austrian.

“When we look back in many years, it is very special to have been part of that journey, and a witness to this journey because he is the all-time record holder.

“If you were to be in awe then that would be the wrong working relationship but we realise that we have been part of a journey that no other sportsman in Formula 1 has done so far.

“I think his record speaks for itself. He is just the best there has ever been.”

As for Hamilton, he surprisingly admitted: “It’s taken a long time to get to 100 and I wasn’t even sure whether or not it would come,” he said post-race in Sochi.

“Also to continue to building with Mercedes, of which I’m so proud of everything we’ve done, not only on track but also off. It is just a special moment for everyone that has been a part of it.

“I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful to all these men and women that are here and back in the factory because, wow: 100!”
