Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has brushed off a report linking him to Chase Carey’s role as Formula 1 CEO from 2021.

Earlier this week, RaceFans put forward the possibility citing Carey’s expected departure after next season with Wolff is also out of contract at the German manufacturer.

Having already achieved so much success with Mercedes and with a change of CEO, it was suggested the Austrian might fancy a new challenge and Liberty Media would be interested in considering him.

“I could not take my job seriously if I participated in such speculation,” Toto told Kronen Zeitung. “A journalist has written a funny story which is full of speculation.

“But I am still at Mercedes for a long time and have a great task to lead this team. It’s fun and not something I want to change.”

After the story was published, it was noted that Ferrari could potentially block Wolff taking over due to a veto which they hold over any big decision in F1.

That veto, first negotiated by the founder Enzo Ferrari, has come up for debate as the sport shapes the 2021 regulations, but current boss Mattia Binotto defended it this weekend in Spain.

“Certainly the veto right is something important for Ferrari but I believe it’s something important for F1 overall as well,” he claimed.

“Somehow it’s not only protecting us but it’s protecting all the teams maybe against some decisions which could be against the spirit or the interest of the teams themselves, something that we are starting discussing with both the FIA and F1.

“I think we are doing well in that respect and hopefully we can keep the same rights.”
