Ferrari has officially revealed their new 2019 car, the SF90, at a launch event in Maranello on Friday.
The special chassis name commemorates 90 years since the Italian team was founded by Enzo Ferrari in Modena in 1929.
As expected the car features a tweaked livery with a darker tone of the famous scarlet combined with black in a matte finish to coincide with the team’s partnership alongside Philip Morris’ ‘Mission Winnow’ initiative.
However, in terms of the design, there appears to be very little in terms of changes compared to last year’s car which was a match for Mercedes for much of the season.
The only noticeable feature is the front wing which appears to be following the concept Alfa Romeo first revealed on Thursday with the upper elements sculpted back to recreate the ‘outwash’ effect that was lost under the new regulations.
Speaking at the event though, CEO Louis Camilleri admitted work continues to get the SF90 ready for testing on Monday where more details will likely be seen.
Sebastian Vettel will again look to lead the Scuderia’s charge but faces a new threat from teammate Charles Leclerc, with the highly-rated Monegasque stepping up from Sauber.
The pair will be tasked with making the final step towards clinching Ferrari’s first championship in 11 years, having finished second to Mercedes the past two seasons.
“The car embodies the state of the art technology, reflects the new regulations and is the fruit of the combined enormous work and talent of everyone at the Scuderia,” Camilleri stated in a speech.
“We are all very conscious of the huge responsibility our history entails and that we carry the expectations of an entire nation and our millions of fans around the world.
“Last season was our best in 10 years yet we fell short of our objectives. It wasn’t easy to swallow but we look ahead with determination.
“We, of course, have two extraordinary drivers. Despite his four world titles, Sebastian Vettel is as hungry as ever and knows full well the entire team will give him their full support.
“Alongside Sebastian is Charles Leclerc. His sheer talent, maturity, great skill and speed were evident to all last year and we are sure great things await him in the future.”
Ferrari also heads into 2019 with a team boss as Mattia Binotto replaced Maurizio Arrivabene at the start of the year.
“Despite the obvious pressures the atmosphere within the team is one in which serenity will prevail,” the CEO concluded.
