Jorge Lorenzo had taken 145 podiums in the World Championship by the time the lights went out in Jerez, and the Spanish GP was the day to take number 146 and ride into parc ferme for the first time in red.

The Ducati Team rider picked off those in front of him one by one, finally pulling away from Johann Zarco in the latter laps to secure P3 – fourth time lucky on the Ducati after a stunning ride, staying level with Dani Pedrosa with the third most podiums of all time.

Jerez has been Lorenzo’s Land before, with a number of wins for the five-time World Champion at one of his home tracks, and the signs were looking good from Friday.

After progress in Texas and a huge step forward in Jerez, Lorenzo said getting the Ducati on the podium at the venue felt more like a win – and not to doubt his mentality.

Maverick Vinales  topped Warm Up at the Spanish GP - but with his second fastest lap.

How is that possible? Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) did the exact same 1:39.433 to share the honours as fastest, but Vinales goes top with his second quickest effort proving faster than the 'Spartan''s.

Cal Crutchlow backed up his front row start with a P3 on Sunday morning, with fellow front row starters Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez in P7 and P8 respectively.

Dani Pedrosa took an impervious victory in his home Gran Premio de Espana, storming away from his first pole position since Sepang 2015 and never looking back.

The MotoGP race in Jerez was race number 3000 in the World Championship and one of the riders equal third on all-time podiums proved a fitting winner.

Reigning Champion Marc Marquez  made inroads in the points battle in second, ahead of a stunning home ride from another five-time World Champion – Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team), sharing the podium with Pedrosa to keep the parity at 146 rostrum finishes apiece for the former nemeses.

Pedrosa got the holeshot from a great start off pole position, with Marquez slotting in behind ahead of an almighty tousle for third. LCR Honda rider Crutchlow was initially ahead of that battle - with Johann Zarco warring Championship leader Valentino Rossi once again until the flying Frenchman set off on a charge, taking bike after bike in now-signature style.

Arriving behind reigning Champion Marquez into third, the rookie held station for a lap as Lorenzo fought back in a tight midfield, getting past Rossi and then Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). Zarco then took Marquez at the final corner, heading off after Pedrosa in the lead until the reigning Champion hit back.

Drama struck further back as Jack Miller and Alvaro Bautista  collided and slid out, before Cal Crutchlow then lowsided into the gravel at Criville – followed shortly by the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine of Pol Espargaro.

After a short tousle with Maverick Vinales, Andrea Iannone  also tumbled out with 17 laps to go.

The gap fluctuated at the front but Marquez was unable to make any real impression on Pedrosa’s lead, with the three-time World Champion pulling the pin in the final laps to cross the line in clear air for another stunning win – making it 16 years in a row the Spaniard has taken at least one victory in the World Championship.

Lorenzo had an incredible race on home soil for a first podium with Ducati, moving past Zarco after a positive weekend all round and pulling away to jubilation for the ‘Spartan’ as he pulled into parc ferme. Zarco took fourth in another scintillating performance for the reigning Moto2 World Champion, ahead of an impressive fight back for Andrea Dovizioso to get past Vinales after the Spaniard made a mistake.

Danilo Petrucci stormed back through from P13 on the grid to follow Viñales over the line, with Jonas Folger solid once again in the top ten to take eighth.

Aleix Espargaro was another who moved through the field, incredibly taking 2016 Jerez winner and Championship leader Valentino Rossi for ninth. The ‘Doctor’ found his pace in freefall in the latter laps of the race, struggling with tyre life in the hot temperatures to complete the top ten – but retaining the Championship lead.

Scott Redding had a much improved race in 2017 to take P11, ahead of Hector Barbera and teammate Loris Baz. Bradley Smith took more points for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in P14 after an awesome show for the Austrian factory in Jerez, with Karel Abraham locking out the top fifteen.

After Pedrosa’s stunning domination on home turf, the Championship is game on in Le Mans with Rossi now two points clear of Vinales, Marquez just behind and Pedrosa now fourth in the standings – only ten points back.

Dani Pedrosa took an incredible pole position in qualifying for the Gran Premio Red Bull de Espana, taking to the top in a last dash and teammate Marc Marquez unable to depose him on his last lap.

Pedrosa was fastest on Friday and on Saturday in FP3, on the charge at his first home race of the year. Behind Marquez is Cal Crutchlow completing the front row in a Honda 1-2-3.

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Maverick Vinales took fourth to head up the second row ahead of Q1 graduate and comeback king Andrea Iannone, with rookie Johann Zarco in sixth.

Fourteen world titles start the Spanish GP from the third row, with Championship leader Valentino Rossi in seventh just ahead of Ducati Team’s Jorge Lorenzo only 0.002 back, as the 'Spartan' had a good day's work on Saturday, back up the timesheets in his home race. Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) is ninth in another solid result for the German rookie.

Jack Miller backed up his Friday pace with direct entry to Q2 and a top ten start despite a crash, with Scott Redding in eleventh and Aleix Espargaro in P12 after graduating from Q1. The rider from Granollers was another crasher in the Q2 session.

Danilo Petrucci starts P13 from Q1, ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and a stunning display from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro to complete the top fifteen, just ahead of teammate Bradley Smith.
