Valentino Rossi had a more difficult Day 1 in the Spanish GP, taking twelfth on the timesheets by the end of play and finding it tough going in the wet and dry.

Saturday is a new day however, and the only man to have been on every podium so far in 2017 will be banking on some overnight improvements to get himself back into contention for back-to-back wins at the track after having taken the victory last year – with FP3 another chance to gain entry to Q2 qualifying and the weather on Saturday hopefully clearer.

The 'Doctor' also tested the new Yamaha 'aero-fairing' on Day 1 in Spain, with a number of pitboxes this weekend putting their versions through their paces.

"The conditions were quite wet today." Said Rossi "This morning the track was full wet and the first impression is that with this bike we suffer a bit more."

"We have to work. In fact, we were not very fast this morning. In the afternoon it was dry, but not completely, so we had to stay cautious because there were some humid patches."

"In the afternoon we also had some problems. We are not fast enough, so we have to work."

Aleix Espargaro (seventh), Danilo Petrucci (eighth) and Jorge Lorenzo (ninth) all featured strongly in the top ten, with the latter in particular showing an adeptness in the wet early into the session, before conditions continued to worsen.

With Honda (four riders), Ducati (three riders) and Aprilia (one rider) all represented in the top nine, Maverick Viñales was the first of the Yamaha M1s in tenth, 0.9s back of Pedrosa's best time.

Jack Miller put in a stunning performance on Day 1 of the Spanish Grand Prix, as the Assen 2016 winner took second on the timesheets as the only man in the 1:39 bracket behind Friday’s fastest Honda's Dani Pedrosa.

"I felt really comfortable on the bike in the wet this morning and was happy to be battling inside the top three." He said "The start of this afternoon’s session was a bit tricky because there were still quite a few damp patches around. But at the end it was completely dry and I was happy with my lap time."

"I did a 1’39.964 and that’s my best lap here at Jerez. I did that time alone as well and I just feel confident and comfortable with how the bike is behaving around this track."

"I’ve got some great feeling from the front end and I can put the bike where I want to without being too close to the limit. It’s a brilliant way to start the weekend and hopefully we can build on this for a strong result on Sunday." He added

Marc Marquez  initially fought it out with teammate Dani Pedrosa for victory in the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, before being able to break clear in the latter laps of the race to take his stunning fifth win in a row in Austin – his 11th straight win on US soil in an incredible statistic.

Valentino Rossi then put on a late charge to take second, with Pedrosa completing the podium – and former Championship leader Maverick Vinales crashing out early on.

Off the line it was an absolutely stunning swoop around the outside for Pedrosa from the second row to lead – old habits die hard - as the Spaniard overtook teammate and polesitter Marc Marquez to lead through Turn 1, with Rossi tucked in behind the two Repsol Honda machines.

Jorge Lorenzo got a great launch from P6 to overtake Maverick Vinales, and the two men dueled it out until Johann Zarco got into the action and followed Vinales past the Mallorcan – before the drama struck.

After two wins from two in the first races of the season, Viñales then suddenly slid out of contention at Turn 18 – lowsiding safely, but out of the fight for victory and taking home a 0 for the first time since Argentina 2016.

Cal Crutchlow had moved up from his P9 on the grid to take the factory Ducati duo for fifth behind rookie sensation Johann Zarco, with Andrea Dovizioso getting the best of Lorenzo to move into sixth.

A moment between Zarco and Rossi then saw the ‘Doctor’ taking to the run off as the rookie attempted a move, rejoining a little further ahead and subsequently receiving a 0.3 second penalty for time gained, to be applied at the end of the race.

It was then the Repsol Hondas’ time to duel, as Marquez and Pedrosa diced for the lead and the number 93 was able to begin pulling away with 13 laps to go.

As the last laps approached, Crutchlow dueled Zarco for fourth to come home top Independent Team rider eahead of the rookie, as Rossi struck against Pedrosa to take third. Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) also got in some late action, making it past Lorenzo and the Italian crossing the line for his first points haul of the season in P7.

Danilo Petrucci also made it past a Lorenzo struggling with grip to take eighth, with the five-time World Champion crossing the line in P9. Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Jack Miller just beat rookie Jonas Folger to complete the top ten - fulfilling his goal for 2017 in the first three races of the season.

Second Octo Pramac Racing rider Scott Redding came home in P12, with Tito Rabat scoring points once again ahead of Hector Barbera and Alvaro Bautista.
